Onkar Sandhu, Sandhu stores

Every grassroots club has a small group who make things possible.  At Coton Green, one of those people is Onkar Sandhu – a coach, volunteer, supporter and steady presence who has shaped the lives of 35 young players over the years directly and hundreds in directly.

Alongside running his busy Nisa store, Onkar coaches two teams, sits on the club committee and gives countless hours to creating a place where young people feel supported, motivated and part of something special.  For many of them, football isn’t just a sport - it’s a space to grow, build confidence and be part of a team.  Onkar helps give them that sense of belonging.

His commitment goes far beyond the pitch.  When storms damaged the club’s facilities and urgent roof repairs were needed, Onkar stepped in to help ensure support was available so the building could stay open for local families. Materials were urgently required and through access to his MADL fund these were purchased and the repair work was carried out.  He’s also personally funded kits for multiple age groups, with players proudly wearing shirts supported by his Nisa store – a reminder of how deeply he invests in his community.

Over the years, Onkar has donated £35,000 to local causes - £15,000 to Coton Green Football Club and £20,000 to other community groups and projects across the area.  From schools and children’s charities to sports clubs, hospice care and local volunteer groups, his support reaches widely across Tamworth.

Through his dedication as a coach, committee member, volunteer and community supporter, countless children and families have a place to play, learn and belong.  Parents have a club they can trust.  And the wider community has a champion who understands the huge difference grassroots sport can make.
