1 in 20 million- Story 6

Lynwen Jenkins, Tymawr Filling Station

If you live in Penrhyncoch, you probably know Lynwen Jenkins – and if you don’t, you’ve almost certainly benefitted from something she’s done.

Lynwen is a mum, daughter, wife, petrol station owner and community champion all rolled into one.  Her commitment to serving her community is second to none and in 2026 she stepped things up again by raising almost £9,000 for Alzheimer’s Society when she and her sister-in-law and daughters took on Trek26, walking 26 miles across London in May.

She and the girls also organised a family fun day on the petrol station forecourt, embracing the power of community spirit and raising an astonishing £2,240 through a bake sale, raffle and car wash.  The funds were split between Alzheimer’s Society and local charity HAHAV Ceredigion, supporting the incredible work they do – including their weekly dementia café.

After completing Trek26, Lynwen thanked the family’s supporters, saying:

“Running a small family business in a busy rural village, we know so many families, colleagues and friends affected by dementia, which makes our fundraising efforts even more meaningful.”

And Trek26 is only part of her story.  Because of her commitment to giving back, Lynwen has raised and donated over £50,000 to more than 30 different groups across Penrhyncoch and Aberystwyth.  She’s even raised over £7,000 from her sustainable MADL clothing recycling bank on the filling station site.

It’s no surprise that Lynwen was recognised with the Local Legend Award at the Co‑op Wholesale Showcase earlier this year – a title that feels more like a description than an accolade.

Stories like Lynwen’s show what our 1 in 20 million campaign is really about: celebrating the people who bring communities together, lift others up and help communities thrive.
