How to paint eggs for Easter

Break out the paints and get creative with your hard-boiled eggs. This is a great activity for kids to get a little bit messy with. All you need is a carton of eggs and some paints or permanent markers.

What you'll need:

  • Eggs, as many as you’d like to decorate
  • Any craft paint (acrylic works best) or colourful permanent marker pens
  • Paint brushes
  • Decorations like glitter or stickers
  • Empty egg carton
  • Old newspaper

Method:

1. The first thing you need to do is boil the eggs. Place the eggs in a pan and pour in enough cold water to cover them by about 1cm.  Make sure the eggs are sitting comfortably and not crashing into one another.

2. Bring to a boil then simmer for around 7 minutes.

3. Drain off the hot water then run the cold tap over them for about 1 minute. Then, leave in the cold water until they are cool enough to handle.

4. Now that you’ve boiled and cooled the eggs, it’s time to have some fun. Place newspaper on the surface you’ll be painting on to prevent any spills or stains.

5. Take your paint or felt tips and start to decorate the eggs.

6. To avoid smudging, paint one half of the egg at a time. Be as creative as you want with your design. You can leave it one colour, paint patterns and shapes, or turn the egg into an animal – like an Easter bunny! Top tip: use fine pointed brushes/thin markers for more intricate designs.

7. Put the finished eggs inside the empty egg carton and leave to dry for 10-15 minutes. Handle carefully and display as you wish. They will last around a week if refrigerated, so make sure you return them to the fridge after showing them off to carry on the fun even after Easter is over!
