Brewing innovation in community retail

Award-winning retailer Kaual Patel has transformed his Nisa Local store in Lewisham into a standout community hub - showing how innovation and local focus can drive success.

What sets the store apart

Kaual has built a strong offer by combining everyday essentials with unique products tailored to his local community - including fresh produce, food to go and an extensive craft beer range.

A standout feature is ‘The Vault’, a chilled space stocking over 300 craft beers and wines, alongside his own Torridon Lager, developed with a local brewery.

Balancing independence with support

By partnering with Co-op Wholesale, Kaual has been able to maintain the independence his store is known for, while benefiting from:

  • access to Co-op own brand products
  • a strong supply chain
  • improved profitability through initiatives like Fresh Rewards

This balance allows him to offer both trusted ranges and locally sourced products that resonate with his customers.

At the heart of the community

Community is central to the store’s success - from supporting local schools to collaborating with nearby businesses, Kaual has created a space that goes beyond retail.

A mosaic designed by local school children symbolises the store’s commitment to the community. That same mosaic is now featured on a new pale ale in store – just one example of how the store reflects the community it serves.
